Heks Documentary: The Journey of Three Norwegian Women in the World of Black Metal

Full details

At the heart of the Norwegian black metal music scene, which has long been male-dominated and charged with a dark atmosphere ruled by men, three young women emerge forming a band called "Witch Club Satan." Musical talent was not a decisive factor in their beginnings, as they did not initially master playing instruments, but they decided to learn and take the stage with new visions reflecting strength and femininity rooted in an aura of mystery and black magic. This is the focus of the new documentary "Heks" by director and cinematographer Maya Holland, who explores the journey, challenges, and dreams of these women.

A True Story from the Heart of Norway

"Heks" presents the story of Nicoline, Victoria, and Johanna, three young women who decided to form what resembles a cult or secret group, driven by their love of music and the pursuit of self-expression in a different form. Their beginnings were not easy, as the band entered a world full of challenges facing women, especially in a field dominated by men where women are often seen as outside the musical or cultural legitimacy. However, these girls, with painted faces and a striking appearance, scream with intense colors in performances on famous global stages and festivals, expressing their desire to break stereotypes and powerfully convey their voices.

The Director’s Personal Journey

Director Maya Holland spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the moment she discovered the band and what motivated her to create this documentary. During a difficult period as a mother of three children, feeling as if she might give up on her dream of filmmaking, she found in Witch Club Satan a spark of hope and renewed vitality. She was drawn to their project, which stems from a desire for liberation and rebellion against stagnation and internal inertia, and from there she set out to document their journey.

The band was in the process of learning to play musical instruments despite none of them being proficient at first, and what distinguished them was their determination to deliver unique music combining elements of magic, feminine power, and a spirit of rebellion. For Holland, it was very important that the film capture not only the band's formation and artistic success but also the personal transformation experienced by each member.

The Female Scene in Norwegian Black Metal

The Norwegian black metal scene is considered one of the most stringent and traditional musical scenes, dominated by a masculine character and strict practices and cultures. Here, Witch Club Satan emerges as a contrasting force challenging reality and seeking to change the rules of the game with scenes brimming with feminine strength and intelligence. The film focuses on the struggles the members faced, including ongoing criticism, growing doubts, and social obstacles that tried to confine them. Yet these young women invested in their belief in magic and the latent powers symbolized by witches, becoming role models for other women in the region and around the world.

Musical and Directorial Production

"Heks" was produced by Mari Nielsen Nera, with co-editing by Maya Holland and Hildi Bjornsdad, who gave the film a strong rhythm that aligns with the spirit of the band and their turbulent worlds. All the musical pieces in the film are performed by Witch Club Satan themselves, enhancing the authenticity and true magic of the experience. The film premiered internationally at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, followed by the Copenhagen International Documentary Festival CPH:DOX.

The Film’s Messages and Human Themes

The film succeeds in delivering an important lesson about female empowerment and the collective challenge to individuality simultaneously, by highlighting the journey of each band member. "Heks" demonstrates how music, combined with the power of spirit and courage, can be a channel for both internal and external revolution. The work also reflects the shadowed side of societies striving to confront and break traditions through a personal experience, hoping to change social reality.

Ultimately, "Heks" offers a living testimony to the ability of women, regardless of their circumstances, to find their voice and overcome difficulties to express themselves freely and creatively.
