Full details
This year, the Oscars introduced a new category: Best Casting, after the list of categories had remained unchanged since 2001, except for the merging of the sound categories. To fill the historical data gap for this category, The Hollywood Reporter conducted a survey involving 92 casting directors who are members of the Casting Society.
Shortlists of the top 15 films for each year from 2010 to 2025 were presented, and participants were asked to rank the top five films for each awards season. The survey applied the Oscars' voting system to select nominees and winners based on these rankings.
The results showed that the film Inglourious Basterds was the clear winner in 2010, with highly precise casting choices for portraying both the Nazi hunters and the Nazis themselves. The film also received ensemble awards from the Screen Actors Guild and critics.
In 2011, The Social Network topped the list for Best Casting, surpassing The Kingโs Speech and Black Swan, although the latter received more Oscar nominations in acting categories.
This survey represents the best current attempt to understand how the results of the Best Casting category at the Oscars might have looked over past years, taking into account the expertise of casting professionals and the advantage of hindsight they possess.
