Project Hail Mary: No Green Screens Used Despite Thousands of Visual Effects Shots

Full details

Christopher Miller, co-director of Project Hail Mary, revealed an intriguing artistic secret behind the film in his recent widely circulated interview. Miller confirmed that the film never used any green or blue screens during filming, despite containing over two thousand advanced visual effects shots. Instead, the film relied on building real sets and practical setups that brought a high degree of realism and engagement to the audience.

Real Set Technique Instead of Green Screens

Speaking to ComicBook.com during the film's promotional tour, Christopher Miller explained that the crew chose to build the entire spaceship as an indoor set, with a large portion of the exterior constructed on location. Additionally, the alien character "Rocky" was continuously filmed using real puppets available to the actors, adding credibility and harmony to the scenes, far from the traditional green screen effects.

The Difference Between Not Using Green Screens and Relying on Visual Effects

Following the widespread news, Miller clarified on platform X (formerly Twitter) that not using green screens does not mean a complete absence of visual effects in the film. More than 2,018 digital shots were executed, including the removal of wires and puppeteers controlling the puppets, replacing the filming ceiling, and other visual enhancements that went beyond green screen usage.

The team used black backgrounds and changing colors to film actor Ryan Gosling during his scenes on the spaceship’s surface, enabling him to receive more natural interactive lighting than green screens provide, which enhanced the quality of the exterior space scenes.

Execution of Space Scenes and Digital Effects in the Film

Miller spoke about the contribution of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) in digitally creating the deceptive space and spaceship scenes with high quality, while the character "Rocky" featured a precise integration between puppetry and animation executed by Framestore. This made the film a comprehensive production that pushed the boundaries of blending live-action and digital effects.

Reactions and Testimonials on Practical Effects in Project Hail Mary

The film received widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics, especially regarding the practical effects used. Among the admirers was the world-renowned director Guillermo del Toro, who attended a special screening and shared his great admiration for the production level and practical techniques in the film, considering them a source of inspiration and a clear commitment to innovation in the current era.

Film Release and Background

Project Hail Mary is being screened in cinemas starting March 20 through Amazon MGM. The film stars Ryan Gosling and is directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel that tells the story of a teacher turned astronaut on a mission to save the sun from a mysterious entity threatening to plunge it into eternal darkness.

The film represents a unique model in blending live-action filming with advanced digital effects, affirming that artistic creativity is not limited to modern technology but requires a clear vision and integrated teams passionate about innovation.
