Mersini Aristidou's Beginnings and Artistic Journey

Mersini was born and raised in Limassol, Cyprus. She completed her studies in film directing, earning a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, in addition to a Bachelor's degree in Cinema and Art History from Pratt Institute. Aristidou began her career producing short films that received international acclaim, helping her build a strong reputation in the cinematic scene.

Early Successes: From Short Films to Feature Films

In 2015, Aristidou presented her short film "Semele," which won the Special Jury Prize in the Generation Kplus section at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film was screened at over seventy international festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival. In 2017, she released her second short film "Aria," supported by several global institutions such as Spike Lee, Canal+ France, and CNC. It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and was later screened at Sundance.

"Hold Onto Me" Shines at Sundance Film Festival

"Hold Onto Me" is Aristidou's first feature-length film, a collaboration between Cyprus, Greece, Denmark, and the United States. The film tells the story of a young girl seeking to reconnect with her absent father who suddenly reappears one summer. The film won the Audience Award in the World Dramatic Competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, an achievement that opens wide international opportunities for the young director.
