Full details

Slash, the renowned guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, has announced his role as executive producer for the new documentary film Black Zombie, which will have its world premiere at this week’s South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival.

What Happened?

Black Zombie, directed by Maya Anik Bedward, reveals the buried origins of the fictional zombie character, reinterpreting it as a symbol of survival and spiritual resistance. The film is scheduled to screen on March 13 as part of the SXSW festival events.

In addition, Slash is also executive producing an independent Canadian horror film titled Sundown, directed by Rebecca Macindry, which recently completed filming in Winnipeg.

Focus of the Event

Black Zombie traces the evolution of the zombie character from its roots in Haitian Vodou, through films such as White Zombie, Night of the Living Dead, and The Serpent and the Rainbow. The documentary features appearances by notable figures including Slash himself, Yves-Grégoire François, Anderson Mojica, Vodou artist and priest Errol Josué, special effects legend Tom Savini, and director Zandashi Brown.

Director Bedward emphasizes that the zombie character essentially represents a celebration of Haitian resistance and Vodou spirituality, praising Slash’s long-standing passion for horror and his respect for Vodou, which made him an ideal partner to bring this story to a wider audience.

Why Does This Matter?

This project marks a new step for Slash in film production, following his debut as a producer on the 2013 horror film Nothing to Fear. It reflects his deep interest in horror films that mirror societal fears and realities, adding significant cultural and historical depth to the film.

The documentary also highlights a rarely explored aspect of the zombie character’s history, moving away from common stereotypes and restoring recognition to its cultural and spiritual roots. This enriches the documentary film scene and offers fresh intellectual material for horror and history enthusiasts.

What to Expect?

Audiences and enthusiasts eagerly await the screening of Black Zombie at SXSW, where the film is expected to spark discussions about the representation of horror and culture in cinema. Fans are also anticipating Slash’s new production Sundown, which tells a thrilling story about three women from different generations who unite for revenge in a remote cabin, featuring elements of vampires and mystery.

This cinematic activity represents an expansion of Slash’s artistic career, as he continues to combine his love for music, horror, and film production, strengthening his position as a multi-talented content creator in the contemporary arts scene.
