Introduction
The film 'Whispers in May' by director Dongnan Chen presents detailed and moving moments that mark the boundary between a girl's innocence and her entry into womanhood. It tells an honest story of three girls in China striving to hold on to their childhood moments before the harsh rules of society are imposed upon them.
A Journey Between Innocence and Responsibility
The film, which will premiere at the CPH:DOX International Documentary Film Festival in Copenhagen on March 15, follows the journey of three Chinese girls on the road. This journey, interspersed with breathtaking landscapes and candid discussions about hope and expectations, takes on a symbolic dimension representing the last moments of childhood before experiencing maturity. The story centers on Qiuho, who faces her first menstruation, signaling her readiness to participate in a traditional ritual known as the 'Skirt Changing Ceremony,' which marks her transition from a child to a woman bound by social, family, and work responsibilities.
Details of the Traditional Ritual and Its Cultural Meaning
The film explains that the 'Skirt Changing Ceremony' is not merely a family celebration but a social transition laden with many restrictions, where the girl moves from the freedom of childhood to the role of a woman associated with marriage and work. In the absence of Qiuho's parents, who work as migrant laborers, and following the death of her grandfather, she embarks on a journey with her two friends to buy the skirt that symbolizes this transformation and passage into a new phase of life.
A Blend of Documentary and Fiction
Dongnan Chen’s artistic approach combines raw documentary realism with an improvised fictional narrative, adding profound human dimensions that transcend traditional social frameworks. The film portrays the girls' world as it is, free from prejudgments, reflecting their feelings, dreams, and struggles within a framework that sketches the elusive contours of the transition between childhood and adulthood.
International Collaboration and Production Support
The film was produced by Jia Zhao from Moyuyi Film in collaboration with Dongnan Chen’s Tail Bite Tail Films studios, along with partners in Sweden and South Korea. Luke Brawley from Endox Company is responsible for distributing the film and showcasing it at festivals. This international cooperation reflects a growing interest in cinematic works that portray diverse cultural experiences and aim to convey impactful stories across borders.
The Story Behind the Camera and Inspiration
The idea for the film began when Chen visited the Liangshan area and noticed writings by local school students, where one phrase strongly resonated with her: “I wished a lot, but none of my wishes came true.” She then met Qiuho’s relative, the girl who became the focus of her story. Although only 14 years old, Qiuho was facing the anticipation of her life shifting into a predetermined societal role without being given the chance to choose her own future. The director used this encounter to present an alternative narrative, fictional yet grounded in reality, helping the girls express themselves freely, whether in joy or sorrow, away from social judgments.
The Film’s Message and Significance
Producer Jia Zhao notes that the film artistically documents a delicate and sensitive transitional stage in girls’ lives, the stage following their first menstruation—a deeply personal and human experience shared across cultures. This work reflects the bold vision of a young Chinese director striving to create independent documentaries in a highly challenging environment. Meanwhile, Zhao, as a European-Chinese producer, feels a strong responsibility to support and promote vibrant artistic stories that express women’s experiences across different cultures and societies, which often remain overlooked.
Ultimately, 'Whispers in May' is more than just the story of a girl. It is a human and emotional reflection of the moment where the dreams of innocence meet the harshness of reality, offering a window into the lives of girls facing significant challenges on their path to maturity.
