Full details

Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s movie originally titled The Shitheads has been renamed ahead of its theatrical release. Independent Film Company announced on Tuesday that filmmaker Macon Blair’s road comedy will hit theaters under the new title Idiots on August 28. The cast includes Mason Thames, Peter Dinklage, Kiernan Shipka, and Nicholas Braun. The movie premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. Idiots follows Mark (Franco) and Davis (Jackson), two aimless men hired to escort a wealthy teenager (Thames) to rehab. It will also serve as the opening night presentation at the 50th Atlanta Film Festival on April 23. Macon Blair (known for The Toxic Avenger) directed the film from his own script and also produced it alongside Dave Franco, Alex Orr, Brandon James, Nathan Klingher, Ford Corbett, Joshua Harris, and Mark Fasano. Executive producers include O’Shea Jackson Jr., Jatin Desai, Greg Freidman, Danny McBride, Jody Hill, David Gordon Green, Jeremy Saulnier, David Gendron, Ali Jazayeri, and Thomas Mann. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at Sundance, the team shared their strong attachment to the original title The Shitheads. Blair recalled pitching the name to producer Orr before the script was completed, which made Orr laugh, and the director admitted, “I got attached to it and became unable to move away from it, so it just stuck.” Dave Franco added, “We’ve been waiting for someone along the way to tell us that we can’t do it.” This news was adapted from a report originally published on hollywoodreporter.com, preserving all essential facts.
