Andy Serkis Confirms Aragorn Recasting in New ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Movie

Full details

Actor Andy Serkis has confirmed for the first time that the role of Aragorn, originally played by Viggo Mortensen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will be recast with a new actor in the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum, a prequel to the Lord of the Rings series.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Serkis stated: "I don’t know what is currently available, but there is a lot of speculation. Let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are in the process of selecting the right person." Serkis is set to direct the film and will reprise his role as the motion capture actor for the character Gollum.

Film Details and Aragorn’s Role

The Hunt for Gollum chronicles events that take place between The Hobbit trilogy and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, where Aragorn and Gandalf embark on a mission to find Gollum in order to gain information about Bilbo's mysterious ring.

Fans had anticipated a recast for Aragorn as the character will be central, potentially the lead in the film. There has been no announcement regarding Viggo Mortensen’s return, while Ian McKellen confirmed his comeback as Gandalf last year.

Recasting Considerations

The decision to recast Aragorn is attributed to the fact that the character will be portrayed as younger in the new film compared to his original appearance in Lord of the Rings. Mortensen was 40 years old during filming of the first movie and is now 67. Ian McKellen was in his 60s playing Gandalf, which made his return easier with the use of makeup and effects to depict the character’s aging.

On another note, Elijah Wood hinted at a possible return as Frodo, with potential use of digital de-aging techniques if required.

Comments from Mortensen and Production Team

When The Hunt for Gollum was announced in 2024, Mortensen expressed willingness to return if the role suited his current age, stating that he loves the character and learned a great deal from portraying him.

Director Peter Jackson is involved as a co-producer alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, producers of the previous films. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
